Radio to the MP3 degree: Podcasting

SEATTLE — Big tech and media companies could not have foreseen this potentially disruptive hitch to their grand strategies. But consider how easily a 20-year-old Briton, Michael Rundle, tapped into the raw power of podcasting. …

Another recent article on Podcasting is at

Associated Press: “Podcasting Lets Masses Do Radio Shows”

If you’re following the news on Podcasting, your best up-to-the-minute news can be found from Adam Curry at this site http://www.curry.com. And by all means start listening to his almost daily Podcast.  Last I heard, he has more than 50,000 people pull a copy via RSS 2.0 to listen to his Podcast the “Daily Source Code.

One point to keep in mind is Adam is a seasoned radio dude. He understands how to use his voice and pull together a string of interesting ditties for each show. However, he does each production live, only once and doesn’t edit, so what you hear is what he gave you. The end result is his work feels more authentic and less ‘manufactured,’ as so much of radio seems today. Even better, there ARE NO COMMERCIALS.

Warning, some of his Podcasts are not always safe for the office to hear, but then that’s part of the appeal of his productions. You never quite know what’s going to happen next or what he’ll say. He’s not bound by the typical USA FCC broadcasting rules and guidelness regardling language.

Other recent news from Adam is that A.S.C.A.P has a new license in place for Podcasting to use music from their library of artists (and that’s a huge library). The yearly fee is $250 for non-profit-oriented Podcasts.

It’s also appealing that the music pieces average only about 60 seconds.  I don’t have all the details here in front of me, but it’s something I want to get my hands on. If you have a hankering to get some cool music from your favorite rock band in your Podcast, you’ll want to carefully read that new license agreement carefully first.

Adam Curry has promised to get a lawyer on the phone on a Podcast soon to explain in layman’s terms how to understand the new A.S.C.A.P music license for Podcast.
