As a provider of private mortgage insurance, some might say that the PMI
Group is probably a pretty risk-averse company. But ask PMI Group’s CIO, Dan
Roberts, about this, and he’ll tell you that the company is certainly not
risk-averse. “We’re in the business of risk management,” Roberts responds.
“What we are,” he adds, “is cautious.”

As one of the largest private mortgage insurers in the U.S., Australia,
New Zealand, and the European Union, as well as the largest mortgage
guaranty reinsurer in Hong Kong, this willingness to take on risk, with an
eye toward managing it, has paid off for PMI, for its IT organization, and
for the man behind that organization. It has been recognized for
successfully integrating wireless technologies into a key business process,
and, in early 2004, implementing a Business Process Management (BPM) system
that combined electronic content management with automated workflow.
According to Roberts, PMI has a legacy of utilizing technology to improve
service and increase efficiency. But by using formalized management
processes such as the Rational Unified (RUF) process, modified for their
requirements, and the Balanced Scorecard quality management system, they
always have their eye on ways that IT can benefit the business.

To learn more about this quiet corporation that places great value on
technology and on the people that make the technology work, join Tom Parish
for an insightful conversation with PMI’s CIO, Dan Roberts.
