Interview with Mike Smith on Corporate Blogging and Podcasting at BMC Software

This is a podcast I have been waiting for months to complete. I’ve
worked with Mike Smith for many years. He asked me to help create a strategy
and then architect a way for BMC Software people to blog and podcast
externally – to public.

I had already helped his webteam move Dbazine.com to a open source CMS called Plone.
So, we used that expertise to integrate a solution into the Vignette system
already in place. In fact we made the Plone support for blogs and podcast
seamless. You can see it at http://talk.bmc.com

Now, truthly all the really heavy lifting to make this project a success
was done by Mike Smith. It’s his vision and persistence that was needed to
explain and sell people internally of the opportunity. Let’s face it the
idea of blogging and podcasting is still pretty foreign for a lot of large
companies. Some of just refuse to do it right now. He had to work on many
fronts from marketing to upper management and over time, he found a way to
get a test going then a final implementation. It’s been exciting.

So I was delighted to have Mike over in late June so the two of us could
just cut loose a bit and talk about this experience of building and
corporate blogging and podcasting site. We talk about the changing
perspectives required in marketing to look at the quality of conversations
that evolve versus numbers of emails sent with this type of outbound
marketing activity. Many other issues around new approaches to ‘web
marketing’ are discussed.
