Fostex FR-2 - Podcasting Field Recorder Arrived!
Good news! The new Fostex FR-2 field recorder arrived yesterday. I was rather eager to see the FedEx truck. As you read in earlier posts, I tried and then returned both the Marantz PMD660 and PMD671 due to extremely noisy microphone inputs and other issues that bothered me.

Tonight Jenny Meadows (my editor and friend, www.mycopyeditor.com) came over, so
I thought this would be a great opportunity for an impromptu Podcast with
the brand new Fostex
FR-2. My first impressions are a combination of joy and relief
after all the disappointment with the Martanz Pro (???) PMD660 and
PMD671. Bottom line: the Fostex FR-2 works extremely well,
it's quiet, and honestly it's easier to use. It's also more expensive,
but I have no regrets.
No, it doesn't look as sleek and pretty as the Marantz units, and
phyiscally it's a little larger, but who cares about that, really?
I'm looking for reliable, professional audio gear that works well
during onsite Podcasting projects for corporate clients. I want consistent,
professional recording results. And most important, I want the raw
recording to be free of electronically generated microphone or internal
machine-generated noise in case I need to repurpose the content into
CD-quality versus encoding at a low-bit MP3 rate for the web. You just
never know. There are many added bonuses in the Fostex FR-2
(more on this in a detailed review later).
Back to the interview with Jenny: I quickly set up two AKG 3000C
microphones, popped in the 4GB memory card and within a few moments
I was recording live our conversation, along with Tinkerbell and Wendy
(the family love dogs) barking in the background and birds chirping near the
open window. The end result - simply divine. With the exception of the dogs
and birds, the background is as quiet as a church. No perceivable
hiss.
During this Podcast, Jenny and I talk about the benefits of using a professional editor for blogging - interesting topic. How do you use an editor in a way that keeps your voice and your writing style? Why would this be important to you if your blogging is related to your business? This discussion comes after I carry on a while about the trouble with the Marantz PMD660 and PMD671, all returned to Sweetwater.com ( for which I'm very thankful).
