Automatic RSS Feed Submission (well, semi-automatic really)

by Tom Parish on 04/21/2008

In my previous articles I've mentioned Robin Good's hand-crafted and REALLY useful directory of RSS feeds that everyone who's serious about blogging should use. If you're like me, sooner or later you just ache for a more automatic solution. It's here now ... sorta. Read on.

I'm picking up a lead here from a newly minted article from Robin Good's blog (actually written by Marjolein Hoekstra -

Automatic RSS Submission Tools: RSS Submit And FeedSubmitter

It's excellent so I'm just going to pass along a few observations.

There are two new 'automatic' RSS submittal tools available now and I tried out both of them today quickly.

One is from Kory Becker, owner and chief programmer of software development company Ksoft.  The price is $24 and that includes updates and a free demo.  I downloaded and used it with no hitch, and I paid for the complete version since the demo submits to only three feeds.  His tool will automatically submit to 25 RSS Aggregators, then a list pops up that guides you through the manual process of submitting to another 20+. So, some manual intervention is required and that's fine, really.

The Ksoft RSS submitter worked great without my having to read a manual.  I'm hopeful he keeps his RSS submittal tool up-to-date with new changes and additions from the fast-growing community of RSS Aggregator directories. I have a number of clients who will benefit from this tool, so I'm personally excited about using it more. One note: About 50% of the RSS Directories (in the Ksoft tool) require you to manually enter in all your information - so be aware, it's not ALL totally handsfree automatic.

One other point worth mentioning is the personal touch that Robin Good has with his RSS Aggregator directory listings. He gives you some personal insight into what the RSS Aggregator wants so you can match up the description of your blog with their focus, or possibly not add your site because it's not what they are looking for.  You don't get this option with an automatic tool.  It's worth reading over his descriptions before jumping for the tool.

The other tool mentioned in Hoekstra's article is browser-based and is also just-released: FeedSubmitter from Thomas Korte.  The author provides you with a list of only 15 RSS Aggregators; however, the  tool is free.

Let me say again, read the article by Marjolein Hoekstra. She offers lots of screen shots and a more complete review on these two RSS Aggregator submission tools.

A word of caution: If you have a new blog (RSS feed), wait a few weeks until you're settled into a groove with your writing. Get some articles built up and a sense of flow about your posting habits.  Many of the RSS Aggregators specifically request that you not submit an empty blog.  You wouldn't do that with a website that had no content, right?

Lastly, it's not about how fast or how many RSS Aggregators you can submit to for fame and glory; it's about your blog's content.   Be patient and enjoy your writing and interaction with your readers.  Readership will follow.
