Google Releases Top 2008 Search Results - "Fastest Rising"
2008 Year-End Google Zeitgeist - the spirit of the times. After a year of a primaries, debates, Summer Games in Beijing, conventions, hurricane Ike, recession, presidential election, and bailouts, Google shows us what was on the minds of Americans in their searches.
Some the searches that I found myself looking up this year that made the list were jeremiah wright, sarah palin, hockey mom, joe the plumber, william ayers and lipstick pig. As you might be able to tell, I'm a political junkie.
Google defines "Fastest rising" as the most popular searches conducted for the first 11 months of 2008 and ranked them based on how much their frequency increased compared to 2007.

Funny Christmas Card my Office Received
Ok, it seems now that companies are trying to very PC about the Christmas / Holiday Cards they they send their clients because they don't want to offend anybody.
Do you put "Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays" or do you just say "Happy Holidays" and don't risk the chance of offending anybody. Well, my office got a holiday card this week that tops them all. I call it an economic card, because it doesn't say "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays," it just says
GOOD LUCK !
iFart Mobile for the iPhone
Now an iPhone app worth purchasing. You can chose your desired fart and start playing the fart sound, but the best part of this app is the delayed fart. See the iFart in action on the YouTube video below. Don't forget about the Security Fart option.
I found this story (Sorry iPhone Users) on Jeremy Schoemaker's blog.

Google AdWords Will Let You Opt to Show Your Ads on iPhone And Android Now
Last weekend I noticed that Google AdWords added a new option that allowed me to select whether I wanted my ads to appear on the iPhones and other mobile devices with full Internet browsers.

This is an awesome feature since we just developed out a mobile site for DUI.com that displays perfect on the iPhone, G1, BlackBerry and most mobile devices.
Getting Disappointed With Sprint's Delay in New Cell Phone Technology
I stopped by a Sprint store in Barton Creek Mall in Austin, Texas on Friday and asked what new BlackBerry phones do they have coming out. The girl proceeds to show me a BlackBerry that had been available for some time already. It's frustrating that the standard response is "we are the last to know when we are getting a new phone." That's just poor marketing.
AT&T got the BlackBerry Bold in Q4 and Verizon got the BlackBerry Storm as well in Q4. Earlier this year AT&T released the iPhone 3G as well. Even T-Mobile released the first Google Phone (G1).
It just seem that over the past several years Sprint has been lacking in new cell phone technology. They seem to be running at least one year behind the competition. This is frustrating for for me since we are moving more into a mobile browsing world. I love how the CEO of Sprint is doing TV commercials now and he is not selling a specific cell phone. Verizon's "can you hear me now" commercials are at least pushing how strong their network is.
Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich's Picture Makes Front Page of the WSJ 2 Days in a Row
Looks like Gov. Blagojevich's picture made Wednesday's (12/11) and Thursday's (12/12) front page of the Walls Street Journal this week.
What does it take to get your picture on the front page of the Wall Street Journal two days in a row? Well, I guess you can try selling an appointment to the U.S. Senate to the highest bidder. It worked for Rod Blagojevich. It also looks like the marketers are working overtime to cash in on Gov. Blagojevich's misfortune while he is in the news. I've seen the morning news shows such as Fox News and CNN showing t-shirts for sale that reference quotes from his wire tapped phone conversations.
Here are my three favorite Gov. Rod Blagojevich's T-Shirts I've seen so far:
- "Classified ad for used U.S. Senate seat"

- "It's Bleepin' Golden"

- "Bribe T-Shirt [EXPLETIVE DELETED]"

Just Released DUI.com's Mobile Site This Week: m.dui.com
We have been working on creating a "true" mobile website for dui.com this year and we finally introduced it to Google this week. It has been a long process, but well worth the investment.
In the first quarter of 2008 we set out to develop a true mobile web site for DUI.com. We didn't want to just add links to a page the says "Click Here for Mobile Version," we wanted our website to detect if the visitor was coming from a mobile phone browser and then automatically redirect the visitor to the mobile site. By doing this we can ensure not to display flash or large pictures that might not be automatically resized on the mobile browser (my BlackBerry 8830 resizes, but my iPhone and G1 don't). The purpose of designing the mobile site was simple, we wanted to make sure that our mobile visitors could convert to sales easily. We had found just because you visit a web site from an iPhone or G1, that doesn't mean you are going to see the website the way it was intended to be viewed. Both of the browsers used on the iPhone and G1 still don't display flash and can frustrate the visitor trying to view a page on 320 pixels wide when the page was probably designed to fit on 1024 pixels wide. The popular mobile devices to visit our websites each day according to our analytics software Omniture Site Catalyst are:
- Apple iPhone
- Apple iPod Touch
- Palm Treo 755p
- Samsung SGH-i617
- T-Mobile's G1 (Google Phone)
- BlackBerry 8310
- BlackBerry 8130
- BlackBerry 8100 (Pearl)
- Danger Sidekick III
- HTC PPC6800
- BlackBerry 8830
Here are a few our customers mobile pages that we released this week:
Los Angeles DUI Attorney Neil Shouse of Souse Law Group has flash, videos and several outbound links for his Los Angeles County, California page on DUI.com that work great on the traditional desktop browsers, but not with mobile browsers. We developed specific mobile pages for Mr. Shoues's Los Angeles County page ( http://m.dui.com/california/los-angeles ) as well as his other counties that he has with us in Southern California and Las Vegas, Nevada. We made sure that the the images that were displayed would render well on the most popular mobile phones that visit our site each day.
- m.dui.com/california/los-angeles
- m.dui.com/california/riverside
- m.dui.com/california/ventura
- m.dui.com/california/orange
- m.dui.com/california/san-bernardino

That was fast to get indexed on "gn 63 nfl patch"
I posted a blog about searching for what the GN 63 meant on all of the NFL jerseys today at half-time of the Dallas Cowboys vs. Cleveland Browns. After the game I find my blog article already indexed with Google and it ranks #7 for gn 63 nfl patch.
See below where my blog article already ranks #7 in the SERP below. That's fast to get indexed. I hadn't even pinged the search engines of the new article yet.
Anyway, thought it was cool to see it indexed so fast. Don't see that too often. Back to helping my 12 year old study for his Social Studies test on Tuesday.

What does "GU 63" patch mean on the NFL jerseys?
It's opening weekend for the NFL and I'm sitting down with my 12 year old son watching the Dallas Cowboys play their first regular season game against the Cleveland Browns and we notice that all of the players jerseys have a black patch with GU 63. We ask each other what does it mean?
Well after not hearing the announcers Troy Aikman and Joe Buck say anything about it, I pickup my Black Berry 8830 and Google "what does nfl patch gu stand for" on Google. I find the answer on the first result at answers.yahoo.com which said:
NFL players will wear a uniform patch this season to honor NFL Players' Association leader Gene Upshaw, who died Aug. 20.The league announced Monday that the patch will have the initials GU and the number 63, which he wore while playing for the Oakland Raiders.
Upshaw died of pancreatic cancer just three days after he was diagnosed...
It's nice that I found the answer so quickly, but I want to FAULT answers.yahoo.com for not detecting that I was viewing their website with a mobile browser and displaying a page that would be easier to read instead of scrolling through pages of unnecessary links for the mobile visitor to get to the answer to my question. I would think that Yahoo would have better mobile navigation.
I can go to ESPN.com, CNN.com or FOXNEWS.com and they will detect if I'm a mobile browser visitor and then display the appropriate mobile version of the page. For example, if I go to www.espn.com on my iPhone the page title will come up with "ESPN iPhone" and if I go to ESPN from my BlackBerry 8830 I will get "ESPN Mobile" both pages are easy to navigate.
It’s frustrating now when websites won't take the necessary time to put the appropriate mobile style sheets in place. I attended the Search Engine Strategies San Jose conference last month and most of the first day had tracks about mobile websites and what companies are doing to make sure mobile visitors can view their websites easier. We are in the process right now of redoing ALL of our sites with the appropriate mobile/hand held style sheets. I know it can be a pain doing this depending on how the user is suppose to navigate through your site, but you have to do it. It's just like the automakers now having to adjust their factories to make hybrids. It will not be fun at first, but well worth it in the end.
Now back to game. GO COWBOYS!

Social Networking Heating Up
I'm VERY impressed with an article in Business Week Online about a new social networking site for businesses, called Visible Path.
Most of you are familiar with, or have a least heard of, social-networking sites such as MySpace or FaceBook. They are set up for individuals to connect and socialize online.
There are also some networking places - like LinkedIn and Ecademy - where business owners can meet and greet. But the proponents of Visible Path aim to take social networking for businesses to another level. Here's a snippet from the article:
Visible Path looks different from other social-networking sites. Users don't create home pages or profiles on Visible Path. The site instead keeps tabs on whom its users communicate with by e-mail or through other means. And it ranks the strength of those relationships based on how often people communicate. Then it helps users find common sources and contacts so they can approach one another to do business.
MULTIPLE PATHS. Here's an example of how the site works: Let's say a salesperson at company A wants to contact the chief information officer at company B. The suitor could make a cold call, but that's not a very good way to get through the front door. Visible Path would let the salesperson seek a colleague or business associate who has a connection to the CIO. He or she may find multiple "paths," in fact. The site also will compile publicly available research on the CIO, tapping resources such as Google or Hoovers.
4WebResults has been working with BMC.com on some social computing-related
projects. They are not as large-scale or comprehensive as MySpace (or
this new start-up). However, the BMC.com social computing projects are
oriented toward building communities of people who share common
interests and want to contribute their knowledge and insights about
shared topics. The experiment of incorporating direct social
interaction with the community is just getting going at www.dbazine.com; however, the traffic increased dramatically after we simply added blogs and RSS feeds.
But
social networking isn't about blogs and RSS; it's about people. It's
about getting the technology out of the way so it's easy for people to
gather and contribute their expertise in common areas of interest and
to connect with others who can help them. These are like huge "trust"
pools where people with shared interests can interact with each other
and gain from the interaction. It's not about cramming more advertising
or consumption into the website; those things come from the members'
interactions with each other.
Here's the point from an SEO
persective: When users create and share content in specific areas,
they also have an opportunity to be more visible in the search engines.
That's a usable, productive, social computing tool. This new movement
is more empowering than posting anonymously on a forum, as it allows
everyone to blog, publish, share and interact in a more sophisticated
manner.
Yahoo Adds Traffic Reports to Online Maps for Major Cities
Guess what! We can now get traffic reports for Austin. Go see it at http://maps.yahoo.com/traffic. If you’re interested in traffic in one of the 70 top metro areas, click on your city. This is just amazing.
Want to know what the traffic snarls will be before you leave for work or head home from the office? Go to http://maps.yahoo.com/traffic. Color-coded icons on the maps for the 70 top metro areas of the U.S. will indicate the severity of any accidents or road impediments along the route. And in the top 20 metro areas, the major highways will change color from green to yellow to red to let you know at what speed the traffic is, or isn’t, moving.
Click on an icon to get details about what the problem is, when it was reported and when it’s scheduled to end. When I looked at
The same traffic information remains on the map even when you ask Yahoo! to also pinpoint area sites for dining, recreation and entertainment, community services, shopping, and financial/ATMs. Most convenient.
The updates come from government agencies and private companies which gather the data from news helicopter pilots, local police and sensors embedded in the various roads.
You’ll be able to get this information in Yahoo! Search, Yahoo! Local, and Yahoo! Maps. Check it out. It takes maps from static to active. Extremely useful.

Democratic Party Takes Debate to YouTube
The Democratic Party reached out to the digital generation during its scheduled South Carolina debate between presidential candidates by broadcasting video questions submitted by users of the YouTube website. Instead of a panel of journalists or political experts, the evening featured regular people and real voters with their own set of questions. CNN sponsored the debate and sifted through over 3,000 videos before selecting about 50 for the event. Those videos were aired during a two hour question and answer format with the eight Democratic candidates.
The result was a totally unique interface between the electorate and the candidates. Rather than canned questions that allowed a candidate to hit sound bites and campaign themes, the videos ranged from thought provoking to offbeat. The common goal though was to keep the candidates’ responses more genuine and spontaneous.
Some of the candidates opened up to the new format, and answered with personality and candidness equal to that of the questioner. Unfortunately though there was little debate between candidates to clarify differences on issues, and they frequently segued to their tried and true talking points.
The videos covered a range of topics, from domestic issues to foreign policy. They included questions on gun control, gay marriage, health, the war in Iraq and race.
The videos brought a unique slant to the event by adding faces to the questions. The unscripted format allowed for some unusual subjects to be broached, like whether the candidates would serve as president for minimum wage or whether they sent their children to public or private schools. The videos also facilitated a creative presentation, such as a snowman asking about climate change.
The candidates capitalized on the YouTube platform by presenting their own videos. Some stuck with campaign issues while others sought to diffuse past stories about their campaigns with humor. Bill Richardson won high marks for his folksy video and he exhibited a comfort with the youthful YouTube venue. Being continually dogged by stories of $400 haircuts, John Edwards mixed serious video with the theme song from the musical ‘Hair’ in his video, closing by asking what really matters.
The impact of the new debate format is still being discussed, though it certainly warrants an innovative label. Some view digital media as a grassroots alternative to mainstream media, and more importantly, the future of the electorate process. Candidates now court the internet world with social networking tools like MySpace accounts, websites and blogs. Voters almost universally want a chance to ask candidates questions for a better understanding of the issues. The CNN/YouTube debate offered a new meeting ground for an exchange of ideas. A similar event is planned with the Republican candidates in September.
